1970 marked the dawn of the parallel film movement in Kannada. The nationally and internationally acclaimed film Samskara was made in this year. Famous writers like Girish Karnad and P Lankesh revolutionised the film industry with this film which created a sensation. Parallel films or art films soon became the growth area. The film eventually won 13 national and international awards.
