Director KSL Swamy made his debut as director with the film Toogudeepa in the year 1966. Pampa Award winner AN Murthy Rao's play Aashadabhooti was adapted as the film Subba Sahstry the same year. Veena Doreswamy Iyengar scored the music for the film. Dr Pu Ti Narasimhachar's poems were used in this film.
