R Nagendra Rao turned independent producer with the film Jataka Pala which was released in 1953. PB Srinivas was introduced as a background singer in Kannada with this film. He sang the solo song, 'Chintisadiru Ramani,' for this film. The same year, the music composer duo of Rajan and Nagendra composed music for the film Sowbhagyalakshmi. Nagendra, also called Nagendrappa, had already made his deubt in films as a singer in the film Srinivasa Kalyana.
