Popular novelist Aa Na Krishnarao wrote the story and dialogues for the film Jeevana Nataka, that was released in 1942. This was the first film independently produced by Gubbi Veeranna. It was also the debut film as actor for Kemparaja Urs, the brother of former chief minister Devaraja Urs.

The film was shot by Wahab Kashmiri, who was working in Calcutta's New Theatere group and who did not know an ounce of Kannada. To help the director, Aa Na Krishnarao gave him an English version of the story and dialogues. Rajkumar's father Singanallur Puttaswamaiah was voice-tested for acting in this film. Since his voice was rough and did not suit cinema, he was asked to dub for his voice by holding the mike far away from his mouth. The film was shot in Coimbatore’s Central Studio for a year.
