Before the dawn of the talkie films, many silent films were made in India. Interestingly, most of the silent era films in India were made in Karnataka.
In 1929, a producer from Bombay named Mohan Dayaram Bhavanani made the silent film Mrichakatika in Karnataka. The actors in the film included Kamaladevi Chattopadyaya and the father of modern Kannada plays TP Kailasam. Theatre legend Gubbi Veeranna was also producing silent films under the banner Karnataka Films and made Harimaye (1928) and His Love Affair (1930) among others.
