It turns out that theatre personality (who infamously called Kannada films daridra) was not the first choice to head the State film award selection committee for 2013. The government had on November 15 selected writer SG Siddaramaiah as the chairperson. But Siddaramaiah backed out citing his recent slip-disc surgery.
The alternate the government has come up with is Govinda Rao, not realising how much ill-will he has in the industry and how strongly Sandalwood dislikes him. Among the other committee members recommended include S Mahendar, NM Suresh, Sumana Kittur, Basha Goolyam, Suresh Urs and MN Vyasa Rao. Cinematographer GS Bhaskar who is also said to have been considered declined due to his prior film commitments.
Now it looks like Govinda Rao will be thrust on an unwilling Sandalwood. Rao has also not apologised for his disparaging comments on Kannada films. His unhealthy comment is still a burning issue in the industry. The final notification of the names will be made in a day or two sources say.
