 Hailing
from Baby village Basaralu Hobli in Mandya district born
to Jayamma and Mudde Gowda - Nagaraj toiled his life to
success. He worked as cleaner, attender and sclaed to
the height of editor in the last 16 years. Baby has set
a tall order in his life and completed editing work for
5000 episodes. He is brimming with happiness on this feat.
Perhaps he is the first one to achieve this astounding
figure of 5000 in Karnataka television history. As senior
journalist Balakrishna Kakathkar puts it - 'Baby has worked
for 25000 hours infront of the editing table'.
Meet
this simple and humble Baby Nagaraj :-
Can
you explain the struggle you underwent?
I
come from a very remote village 'Baby' in Mandya district.
I came looking for my livelihood. Joined the Cosmopolitan
club in Yajanagar as a cleaner. Working their I evinced
interest in studying Automobile. I could not complete
and again joined Mr Nanjundaswamy's house as a servant.
Then I joined Amrapali Bar as a supplier. Here I met Puttamadappa
who took me to Ramdas Naidu studio. I worked as studio
boy.
You
have been beaten it seems?
That
is true. In the wee hours I was asked to bring coffee by
Gurudutt the serial director cum actor. I refused. He hit
me. I went by walk for a long and brought the coffee. When
I served it he refused to take it. He asked me to put it
back to the flask. Then he asked me to come near to him.
I said no. I had the fear that he might again hit me. But
he patted me and strongly advised me to learn editing to
earn my livelihood. That's how I began my journey.
Which
is the first episode you edited?
The
current famous 'Jogi' film director Prem had done 'Nirmitha' television
serial then. The first one to telecast was made by producer Pallakki
Radhakrishna. The first actor I edited was H.G.Dattatreya. he is also
of national repute now.
What
are the television serials you have handled?
Manethana,
Ila, Kanasugalu, Anandasagara, Amruthavahini, Rangoli, Rekhegalu,
Bidige Chandrama, Punya, Vataara, Apartments, Belli Chukki etc.
Who
are you mentors in work?
The
office of Sri Ramdas Naidu is my home in profession. Dattanna
is like father, Ravikiran is the one who gave non stop work.
Besides
editing 5000 episodes do you hold any record?
I
have edited 'Better Tomorrow' made by an Italian. For half an hour
episode there were 520 shots. From 61st episode of 'Manethana' mega
television serial myself, Gurudutt and Bala Suresh maintained the
presence of late Kalyankumar till the 521 episodes.
Have
you won any awards?
I
have won the Aryabhata award, the district award given
by my home town Mandya, Jilla Karyakartha award.
What
is your family consist of?
I
am married with two female children. From my earning I
have finished my sister's wedding.
What
actually made you to achieve this feat?
The
urge to learn and strong will power. I came up in life
from Rs.125 per month salary. Now it is very comfortable
earning for me. I work for 16 hours. When I go home I
do not get sleep for two hours in the remaining six hours
I sleep. I really crawled in my life to come to this stage.
What
is there before you with technological advancement on
the one side?
I
want to get in to films. I have a hairline wish of doing direction.
I have good applause from well known artistes and technicians like
Ramesh Aravind, Ashok Patil, Nagathihalli Chandrasekhar, Prayog
and others.
