ARE YOU TO SAY RAJKUMAR SHOULD NOT ACT”

“Give
me one year time. I will try to balance the family. Let
us wait. Good things might crop up. If not let us go back.
Minimum of six months we will wait” I told my husband
Rajkumar avaru. He agreed for it.
At
this opportunity came for ‘Doorada Betta’. We were all
waiting for wants at Madras and making adjustments to
live. There were little children also. We decided to keep
the shooting at Madras. But that could not happen. ‘Rajkumar
is planning to make the base of Kannada filmdom in Madras’
was the comment passed then. I said keep the shooting
in Bangalore and I will face all the difficulties.
I
used to travel three times in a week from Bangalore to
Madras. I got the power to travel like that from the blessings
of Goddess Chamundeswari.
At
this stage Venugopalji helped me again. He taught me about
the filmdom. How one should live here is what he taught
me. After learning lessons from him I started talking
to everybody.
Some
peculiar things happened. A senior producer had given
Rs.3000 and took signature of mine on a paper. I was totally
upset. But he did not know that I know how to maintain
the accounts. When money is given to folks they would
forget out of fear might have been his opinion. When the
film was over and sat for discussion and he forwarded
the accounts. He asked me to show the accounts. “I said
my mind is accounts paper”. Then he showed the accounts.
I frankly said you have disturbed my mind to that producer.
When he had taken the signature itself I was upset.
From
‘Gandhada Gudi’ I have started having a look at the business
angle. At the beginning of the film I had Rs.19000 in
bank account. I took Rs.10000 loan from Mr Veeraswamy
to pay the income tax of Rs. 28000.
Then
the ‘Gandhada Gudi’ film started. Dwarakish, Ravee together
raised objection that Rajkumar should not do ‘Gandhada
Gudi’. It is because MP Shanker from Mysore they did not
liked him. There was one journalist Gangaraju at that
time.
Rajkumar
did not care for anything. He said “I have agreed I will
act”. When Rajkumar landed in Bangalore they all wanted
to speak to him.
‘I
am Rajkumar secretary. Whatever you want to talk to him
you talk to me’ I said. They said the film should not
take place. I said I don’t know all this. Title has been
registered in Film Chamber? Story has been decided. Song
recording has been completed. What were you doing all
this time I shot back- If you say at the last minute that
film should not be done what will happen to the producer
I said. If you have any qualms put a case. “Who are you
to say that Rajkumar should not act”? How can you take
Rajkumar? Do you have such guts? I got angry went inside
the car and left the place.
Dwarakish
came forward to say something. I said you have no connection
to this. You are an artist. You should not mingle to it
I said. The controversy ended there itself.
Rs.60000
was the remuneration fixed for Rajkumar for ‘Gandhada
Gudi’. Veeraswamy said it will be difficult. He said there
is no market. He had given Rs.20000 for Rajkumar at that
time. I gave back that advance amount and said let us
work and release the film. In case the film run very well,
then equally divide the profit I said. The meeting was
held in High Land for three times. I did not agree. Finally
Veeraswamy gave Rs.60000.
On
the release day of ‘Gandhada Gudi’ Devar Film’s Chinna
Reddy came to me. In a dhoti he had tied Rs.2 lakhs and
put before me. I want the dates of Rajkumar he said. The
dates of Rajkumar are booked for coming three years I
informed him. He increased the remuneration to Rs.3 lakhs.
‘We do films not because of money. We have some set rules.
What is remuneration for that particular year cannot be
decided now. For the next year it will be different. That
is the policy we maintained.
At
that time if Rajkumar acts there will not be business
for films was the rumor spread out. There will be no distributor
for Rajkumar films it is said at that time. In one year
I came to know what film business all about is? It is
at this time we opened an office in Hubli.
Puneeth
was a small child. He switched on the camera for the maiden
production of our banner’s film ‘Trimurthi’.
UNFORGETABBLE
DIALOGUE – Till how long
we keep quiet other will go on talking. When we give back
in our words they will keep quiet. To do so we have to
acquire the power. That is through experience.
