There
is no point in searching good elements in the cinema.
It ought to be there. Good story and artistes is enough.
The point that the film should come out well must be everyone's
aim. Rajkumar avaru had it.
I
was always hell bent on one particular issue. That is
the demand of Kannada artistes in our film. Mr Kamath
a journalist commented that Rajkumar film means there
is no need to see the title card. From their coterie people
will be there he had said in his report. I asked him straight
why you only write always in your newspaper.
I
have been giving chances to Kannada artistes. For Kannada
artistes we have to give the job I have insisted. Vajramuni,
Toogudeepa Srinivas, Shanimahadevappa, Batti Mahadevappa,
Nagappa are some of them who trusted our company. Believing
cinema they have left the theatre. It is not proper to
throw injustice on them.
From
the beginning I was of the opinion that those who are
in the government job should not be given a chance first.
Firstly they agree for small remuneration and secondly
acting is not their bread. If the villain roles come give
the chance to MP Shanker or Togudeepa Srinivas I was of
the opinion. Rajkumar was also vouching for this call.
I
would always say Singeetham Srinivas is great. He moulds
any given actor. He has changed Togudeepa Srinivas to
a comedy role in 'Haalu Jenu'. Rajkumar never used to
say so and so artiste is not required. Shaping up of a
good cinema was the top priority for him. If the film
comes out well it is because of Kannada artistes the film
has run or when the film is bad because of outside artistes
it is so, no one would conclude it like that.
In
the case of heroines we could not keep up this. The Kannada
girls are reserved. The girls who would know acting were
also less in those days. We have brought in new Kannada
heroines like Manjula, Jayamala, Kalpana, Asharani, Sudharani,
Malashri, Anu Prabhakar, Prema, Ramya, Rakshita etc. Malashri
role was very important in Nanjundi Kalyana and she turned
out to be the mainstay. The reason why Kannada girls did
not turn up is because of some reservations in their mind.
I was giving a signal that our make up man, costumer,
choreographer, fight master get priority over others.
Jayasri, Pappamma, Shanthamma were getting chances like
that.
My
strong conviction was disliked by many. Is the film industry
belongs to you? Many of them asked out of frustration.
I was never a worried person for such comments. Whether
I am industry or not, you do according to what I said
was my contention. If such stubborn nature is not there
you would not get the things done.
Even
to this day I shout at those who say for artistes the
remuneration is too much. For outside heroines they spend
lakhs of rupees why can't you give for Kannada artistes
is my comment. People get angry for this. I don't mind
for it.
Till
'Shabdavedi' I was selecting the costumes for heroines
like Madhavi, Saritha, Geetha. Sometimes one or two extra
asked by them was also bought.
In
dresses Rajkumar avaru was very strict. For 'Girikanye'
shooting a day before the shooting I asked him to look
at the dresses purchased. He said no need to see. But
after compulsion he looked at the costumes and got wild.
The expensive dresses were bought to his role while for
the superior role in the film low quality dresses was
bought. He asked me to change the dresses according to
the roles. I was perplexed. Finally the dress that is
less in quality – a Lungi and a Banian was bought. Rajkumar
was in that attire and that was liked too much. Next day
according to the role the dress was prepared. Do not give
the dresses to Rajkumar but to his role he was instructing.
My
brother Govindaraju was very right in the selection of
costumes. Any costume he was 'Pukka' in getting at the
right time and place. He was liked by all the directors
for this neat job.
UNFORGETTABLE
– For any artistes work with discipline and dedication
is said they used to reply am I a Rajkumar. They may not
be Rajkumar. But to become Rajkumar the effort should
not fail. What is wrong in learning his discipline and
dedication?
See
you next Tuesday. Namasthe.
